Resisted plantar flexion of the foot

Positioning.

The patient lies supine with the knee extended and the foot in neutral position. The examiner is distal to the foot. One fist is placed under the metatarsal heads while the other hand stabilizes the distal end of the leg just proximal to
the malleoli.

Procedure.

Ask the subject to plantar flex the foot.

Common mistakes.

None.

Muscle function:

• Triceps surae
• Tibialis posterior
• Flexor hallucis longus
• Flexor digitorum longus
• Peronei longus et brevis.
