Tail Bone Pain (Coccydynia)

WHAT IS COCCYDYNIA?

Coccydynia is the inflammation of the tip of the tailbone and the pain is often worse on sitting.

HOW IS COCCYDYNIA PAIN DIAGNOSED?

Coccydynia is commonly diagnosed based solely on the symptoms and the examination findings of local tenderness over the tailbone.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

Coccydynia is often caused by an injury, but it may occur spontaneously. There are many causes of tailbone pain which can mimic coccydynia, including sciatica, infection, pilonidal cysts, and a fractured coccyx bone.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?

Treatments include using a well-padded seat when sitting and avoid long periods of sitting when possible. Some patients with persistent coccydynia are treated with local cortisone injection.

    Dear Doctor,
i’m a 30 yr old mom of a three yr old boy. i had a c-section delivery n was given an epidural shot before the surgery.I seem to be suffering from coccydynia since 8th jan 2010,i started expereincing it from october 2009.That time i would feel a little pain after a prolonged sitting(about 45 mins) in the car mostly i.e. i would feel a spreading pain upon getting up.I kind of ignored it and travelled for 11 hrs by road in jan n its been terrible since then. I can’t sit comfortably at all despite all precautions.I have consulted a few orthopaedics but they all seem to confuse me.
    I need to know-
a)How many hrs of rest do i need in 24 hrs?
b)What nature of rest should it be- bed rest or relaxed/slow body activities?
c)how long does it take for the body to heal from this problem?
d)should i seek physiotherapy for this problem?if yes what should it be like?

    Eagerly awaiting Your reply
    Thanks
