Carpal tunnel syndrome in Singapore

Carpal tunnel syndrome in Singapore

Carpal tunnel syndrome in Singapore

What it is:

  • Swelling, pain, tingling and numbness in the wrist and hand.
  • The areas most affected are the thumb, index and middle fingers. One is unable to hold objects because of weakening thumb muscles.
  • In serious cases, there is a loss of sensation, including the inability to feel temperature.
  • Common among middle-aged females due to hormonal changes and their smaller wrist bones, which give less room for nerves and tendons to run through.
  • Those with a history of wrist fractures and diseases such as diabetes, which can enlarge the structures in the wrist, are also more susceptible to this condition.
  • If left untreated, it can lead to permanent damage of the compressed nerve and paralysis of the fingers.

What causes it:

It is believed to be caused by the increased pressure in the carpal tunnel of the wrist through which the tendons and median nerve run. This nerve controls movements and sensations in part of the hand. Any swelling within the space, such as swelling of the tendons, can compress the nerve and lead to a loss of sensation and mobility of the fingers.

Treatment options:

Wrist braces (left), anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections to curb inflammation and surgery to release the pressure on the median nerve.
