FUNCTIONAL EXAMINATION OF THE HIP

Introduction/general remarks

Examination of the hip cannot be disconnected from that of the lumbar spine and the sacroiliac joints: pain in the buttock or thigh has very often a lumbar or sacroiliac origin. Furthermore, it is also very difficult to examine the hip without applying stress on sacroiliac joints and lumbar joints. Therefore, a preliminary examination of lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint may be appropriate to exclude any lesion in these regions. Most of the hip tests are executed by using the leg as a lever.
