Ortolani’s test

Significance

This test is used for early detection of congenital dislocation of the hip in babies. During the test a subluxated hip is reduced.

Positioning.

The baby lies on its back with the hips flexed to 90° and the knees completely flexed . The examiner grasps the leg in such a way that the thumb presses on the inner side of the thigh and the ring and middle fingers are on the outer thigh, the tips touching the trochanter.

Procedure .

Abduction is performed.
The moment the resistance is overcome, the femoral head rides over the acetabular edge and reduces. This is felt as a snap. If the hip displacement is irreducible, a clear limitation of the abduction at the pathological side will be detected.
