Resisted extension

Positioning.

The subject lies in a relaxed supine position with the hips slightly abducted. The
examiner stands at the foot-end of the couch. His clasped hands carry the heel and lift up the leg.

Procedure.

Ask the subject to push the extended leg towards the couch and resist the movement.

Common mistakes.

None.

Muscle function:

• Gluteus maximus
• Semimembranosus
• Semitendinosus
• Biceps femoris
• Adductor magnus


Common pathological situations.

Pain may result from a hamstring lesion or a sacroiliac strain.
