Standardized Assessment of Concussion

Standardized concussion assessment forms have been developed for initial evaluation of the concussed athlete. While standardized assessment is not a substitute for a physician evaluation or a formal neurologic or neuropsychological examination, it does help to detect and quantify initial cognitive deficits, and it provides an objective and standardized mental status examination directed toward the concussed athlete.

The utility of a standardized concussive assessment is maximized when individual baseline test data are available. These types of forms have allowed longitudinal and multicenter studies to better define the significance of postconcussion symptomatology. Using these types of standardized assessment instruments, it was shown that amnesia is up to 10-fold more predictive of outcome following sports concussion relative to brief loss of consciousness in high school and college athletes.
